Michelle Yetman, PhD Each November, we pause to recognize Premature Infant Awareness Month, honoring the smallest fighters among us; babies who arrive weeks or even months before their due date. Premature birth, defined as birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, affects about one in ten babies in the United States each year. Not long ago, many of these infants faced impossible odds. Today, thanks to tremendous advances in medicine, even babies born very early, some weighing less than a bag of sugar, can survive and go on to live full, happy lives.
